Philo’s Bar is a special place, somewhere you can mix with friendly locals, fellow expatriates or friends you’ve never met. That’s because it’s a restaurant/bar/community corner owned by Philo Hayward, a world traveler, sailor, great musician, good citizen and friend to many. He is well known in this neighborhood of La Cruz.  By day the restaurant operates as a school to the local children. Saturdays are Spanish lessons for anyone who wants to learn. Many US/Canadians that come to this area yearly meet here to re-connect. There are yoga classes during the day, a book exchange and bulletin boards for the things going on around town. Fellow world travelers who’ve docked their boats down at the new La Cruz marina are hanging out and using the internet to check e-mails and use the phone. Philo discovered this area while sailing himself. He was looking for a place to make music and show off talent. He is well connected in the music business and now helps others get noticed. He often lets them record CD’s in his studio. They pay him back with their performances that always pack the house. Philo is a big part of an organization that helps local residents with medical expenses. The Friendship Club of La Cruz is a collection of good hearts from all walks of life based at Philo’s who look for ways to ease the burdens of those in their community. Right now they’re involved in building a place for seniors. There is always a fundraiser going on that you would want to be a part of. They’re fun! you meet great people and you help great people. Philo’s is always ready to offer up his place for a Super Bowl party, Fiesta fundraiser, benefit breakfast or a good cause of any kind that makes this corner of the world a better place.
